Overview

The United Kingdom offers the shortest route to a recognised postgraduate qualification anywhere in the English-speaking world: a taught master's takes twelve months, which cuts both tuition and living costs roughly in half against a two-year programme elsewhere. Beyond the Russell Group, the post-1992 universities in Coventry, Greenwich, Hertfordshire, Salford and Sunderland accept a broader academic profile and price accordingly. London carries a premium on rent that a similar course in the Midlands or the North of England does not.

Why students choose United Kingdom

A one-year master's degree, degrees recognised without question by employers in Bangladesh and the Gulf, and the Graduate Route visa allowing two years of unrestricted work after graduation. Dependants are permitted for research degrees and for a small set of funded postgraduate courses.

How the education system works

Bachelor degrees run three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four in Scotland. Taught master's degrees run twelve months including the dissertation, and a PhD three to four years. Pre-master's and foundation years bridge applicants whose qualifications fall short of direct entry.

What tuition costs

Taught master's degrees run GBP 14,000 to 26,000 for the whole programme. Undergraduate degrees run GBP 12,000 to 24,000 a year, with clinical subjects and London institutions above that.

What living there costs

The Home Office maintenance requirement is GBP 1,483 a month inside London and GBP 1,136 outside, for up to nine months. Real spending outside London typically lands between GBP 900 and 1,200 a month.

Scholarships and funding

Chevening funds a full one-year master's including airfare and a monthly stipend, and Commonwealth Scholarships do the same for candidates from low and middle income countries. GREAT Scholarships give GBP 10,000 towards tuition, and almost every university runs its own international discount.

The student visa

The Student route requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before application, a tuberculosis clearance certificate issued in Bangladesh and payment of the Immigration Health Surcharge. Credibility interviews are routine for applicants from Bangladesh.

Working while you study

Degree-level students may work 20 hours a week during term and full time in vacations. Self-employment and professional sport are prohibited on the Student route.

Staying on after you graduate

The Graduate Route gives two years of unsponsored work, three after a PhD. Moving onto the Skilled Worker route requires a licensed sponsor and a salary above the current threshold, and five years on that route leads to indefinite leave to remain.

Questions

What families ask about United Kingdom

How much should I budget for a year of study in United Kingdom?

Tuition runs roughly GBP 12,000 to 30,000 a year depending on the institution and the subject, and living costs add another GBP 9,600 to 15,000. Treat those as the planning figures for your first year — the visa authority will expect evidence covering both, not tuition alone.

Can I work part time while studying in United Kingdom?

Degree-level students may work 20 hours a week during term and full time in vacations. Self-employment and professional sport are prohibited on the Student route.

Budget as though that income does not exist. Visa officers do not count it towards your maintenance requirement, and neither should you.

What does a United Kingdom student visa application need?

The Student route requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before application, a tuberculosis clearance certificate issued in Bangladesh and payment of the Immigration Health Surcharge. Credibility interviews are routine for applicants from Bangladesh.

Can I stay and work in United Kingdom after I graduate?

The Graduate Route gives two years of unsponsored work, three after a PhD. Moving onto the Skilled Worker route requires a licensed sponsor and a salary above the current threshold, and five years on that route leads to indefinite leave to remain.
